First Trimester

Week 12: Your Baby is the Size of a Plum

You may start to feel better as the first trimester ends. A small bump may be visible, especially if this is not your first pregnancy. The risk of miscarriage drops significantly after 12 weeks, which is why many people choose this time to share their news.

The pituitary gland at the base of the brain is beginning to produce hormones. Reflexes are developing - the baby will move if you prod your abdomen, though you can't feel it yet.

South Africa Specific Info

The dating scan (first ultrasound) is typically done around 12 weeks in both public and private sectors in South Africa. This confirms your due date, checks for multiples, and screens for certain conditions. In the public sector, this may be the only routine ultrasound offered (along with the anomaly scan at 20 weeks). Nuchal translucency screening is performed between 11-14 weeks.
